The Eraserheads
1987, from the UP grounds Ely Buendia had his first college band they we're called the Bluidie Tryste
Ely played bass, with Luci Dela Pena (guitar/vocals), Earl Pangilinan (keyboards), & Drexis Tabiligan (drums)
1988, Raymund, Marcus and Buddy entered UP College
At this time Luci & Ely wanted to form a new band so they posted audition ads
Raymund was the first to respond, he also invited Marcus & Buddy to come along but nothing happened to that audition...
Later on Raymund, Marcus and Buddy formed their own band,
They called themselves "Curfew," they're vocalist was Candy Pelayo
While Luci & Ely formed "Sunday School," and Raymund sometimes played drums for them
But after sometime Luci left the band and focus on Jazz music
So Raymund brought Marcus and Buddy to join up with Ely & calling themselves "The Eraserheads"
Inspired from the movie "Eraserhead" directed by David Lynch
1989, the band performed gigs around the UP Campus in Diliman They did cover songs from bands like The Beatles, The Cure, & Sex Pistols
The band found that they weren't good at playing covers so they concentrated on writing their own material instead
1990, they met Jett Pangan of The Dawn during a Valentine show gig, he advised them to do an audition at Club Dredd
1991, they auditioned and was hired as one of the opening acts in Club Dredd
and the talent fee they received was P200 everynight
but also they failed they're audition in Mayrics
The band recorded some garage sessions in Raymunds place, the tape consist of 9 songs
they submitted the tape to various clubs, record labels, & radio stations,
but it was rejected and classified by RJ Recording Studios as "not pop enough"
They made another demo tape "POP-U!"
recorded by Sir Robin Rivera in the UP Faculty center
In summer of 91, "Pop U!" was released, a limited 20 cassette copies
it was distributed free for friends and loyal fans
Buddy, a struggling calculus student went home and quit the band
1992, the band performed at the UP Fair '92 without Buddy
but in March he came back from Zamboanga
During this year Ely was employed by BMG Records Pilipinas as a student copywriter
It was Director Vic Valenciano of BMG A&R Department notice Ely's song
And was very well impressed by the Band itself
Finally, BMG signed up Eraserheads for a three year record deal
In the same year they started recording their first album "Ultraelectromagneticpop!"
1993, They had their first tv appearance on "Sa Lingo nAPO Sila" performing "ligaya" live
By April they completed recording their album and releasing it on July ??
BMG initially released 5,000 copies of the album
With smash hits as "Ligaya", "Pare Ko" and "Toyang"
by the end of year the album sold 300,000 copies!
The Eraserheads was an instant hit
The OPM Fab Four, opening the second wave of band invasion in the Philippines
1994, in the NU Rock Awards, they won "Album Of The Year"
their follow up album came up on October in titled "Circus"
with top hits such as "Minsan," "Kailan", "Magasin", "Alapaap", "With A Smile" and "Sembreak"
By the end of the year they performed their fist major concert "Eraserheads Jamboree" at the Folk Arts Theater
1995, they debuted in the big screens with Joey De Leon for the "Run Barbi Run" Movie
For the 2nd year in a row they won the NU "Album Of The Year" Award
August, the song "Alapaap" was called for a ban on the airplay by Sen. Tito Sotto over an alleged promotion of drug abuse in the lyrics of the song
December, "Cutterpillow" the third album was released
they played their new single "Overdrive" at ASAP
1996, opening a new year "Cutterpillow" turned gold
with instant hits such as "huwag munang itanong sa akin," "Superproxy," "Torpedo," & "Ang Huling El Bimbo"
In the NU Awards they won Best Video For "Ang Huling El Bimbo" & their 3rd "Album Of The Year" Award
Later that year, they came up with a conceptual Christmas album called "Fruitcake"
1997, April, the band had their First Eraserheads U.S. Tour
June, the band released an 3 track EP titled "BananaType"
